Frequently asked Questions.

  1. What do we get for the $40?

    1. The $40 will cover all costs for the badge, food and two nights of camping at Page Field. Any excess funds will go to pay for expenses associated with our Post 491 going to Base Camp at Air Venture in Oshkosh WI. Base Camp is an aviation scouting encampment event for our post.

  2. Will their be any competitions or games?

    1. YES, YES, YES we love competitions.

      1. We already have prizes for two games. A photo contest, and an aircraft preflight competition. So don't forget a camera...

  3. Is this event Co-Ed?

    1. Yes, the merit badge is for "Boy Scouts" although Learning for Life and some BSA programs are Co-Ed.  We as an Aviation Exploring Post do in fact have female participants.

    2. At this time no females are sign up to participate, but in the event that one does decide to register. She will be gladly accepted and we already have approved female advisors available for the event.

    3. We have also made arrangement to partition the sleeping area for male and female areas as well as adult vs. youth areas.

  4. What should my Son or Daughter bring?

    1. Pen and Paper

    2. Camera if they would like. We will have a photo contest. (No Cell Phones, for participants)

    3. Sleeping Bag and Pad.

    4. Appropriate sleeping attire

    5. Bug spray (no open flame)

    6. Flashlight

    7. Toiletry items. (i.e. towel, soap, washcloth, toothbrush, paste etc.)

    8. Registration packets signed by guardian.... preferably Guardian at drop off incase of problem

  5. What should my son or Daughter NOT bring?

    1. CELL PHONE (emergency number will be provided at registration)

    2. Game system

    3. Clock

    4. Radio

    5. Anything you feel as a parent could distract.

    6. Extra non-aviation reading books... (We will provide aviation library for youth that like to read.)

  6. Where will the event take place?

    1. "Paragon Flight Center" which is located on the North side of "Page Field Airport" in Fort Myers Fl.

  7. Will my son or Daughter get to Fly?

    1. To obtain the merit badge one must take an airplane ride or simulate that flight in an approved flight simulator. Thus we have made arrangements with EAA Young Eagles to give each participant a ride.  Click here for more information.

  8. What will the sleeping arrangements be for the event?

    1. Male and Female advisors and/or participants will have separate sleeping areas.  Each participant will have designated areas for his or her personal items. 

    2. We will be inside a large aircraft hanger.  By night we will unroll sleeping bags. and by day each bag will be rolled up and put away. As the same area will be used for events and activities.

    3. Plastic tarps will be used to divide sleeping areas.

    4. Proper evening and sleeping attire is required.

  9. Who will be the event Advisors?

    1. Approved "Learning for Life" (A BSA subsidiary) advisors from Post 491 will be utilized.  At all times two deep procedures will be in place and during activities we will additional advisors responsible for that activity other then the two supervising or "Designated Supervising Advisors".

    2. Two designated advisors will be on duty at all times to ensure proper activates, behavior and actions by participants, volunteers, parents, and instructors.

    3. In addition all adult participants/volunteers will be asked to take youth protection training. (click here to take youth protection online training).

  10. Can I join my son/daughter at the event?

    1. Parents are encourage to come to the awards lunch on Sunday, and to EAA young eagles pancake breakfast on Sunday morning.

    2. As for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday parents may also come, However, you will be asked to preregister for one of the following and you will be required to take youth protection training at this link... (click here to take youth protection online training).

      1. Sign up as a participant and pay your $40.

      2. Volunteer to help.

      3. Sign up as an Instructor.

  11. What are the Rules for the Event Participants and adults?

    1. NO CELL PHONES OR GAMES. (parents will be given a designated emergency contact number)

    2. Scouting conduct towards others and facility.

    3. Respect instructors, advisors, and adults.

    4. Leave facility in "as found" or better condition.

    5. No tobaco or controlled beverages on airport property by anyone.

    6. Appropriate co-ed attire must be worn at all times.

  12. Is this event approved or sponsored by the council?

    1. Officially NO.  It is not organized by the council. No council staff have directly planned any portion of the event, and no staff members will be attending in an official capacity.

    2. Yet the council does know about the event, has and continues to help promote our event and has assisted the Aviation Exploring Post as a Post in meeting the high level of standards expected from a troop or post activity.

    3. Aviation Exploring Post and it's charter organization assumes responsibility and liability for the event. Not a Southwest Florida Council Event

    4. The South West Florida Council, however, holds aviation merit badge consolers to a high level of excellence and holds Aviation Exploring Post 491 although separate legal entity, to all regulations and rules of a Learning for Life - as an Exploring Post chartered by Page Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

  13. What is the Schedule for the event, and what time should we be there to pick-up and Drop off?

    1. Please be at Paragon Flight Center Between 6 and 6:30pm on Friday June 1st. for on-site registration. We will be doing team building exercises till everyone is present then we can get started.

    2. As for pick up... We will be attending Young Eagles on Sunday morning parents are welcome to attend but will be asked to volunteer/help.  After Young Eagles the event will conclude with a BBQ event were parents are encouraged to come.  We will have a small awards presentation. Give our sponsor a moment to talk about the programs and what they do.  Then enjoy BBQ and mingle with Pilots, Instructors and Volunteers willing to talk about their career in aviation and what aviation means to them.  They will also help any parents that wish to get their son or daughter more involved in aviation.
